Skaneateles Season Officially Over

by Jeff Fisher
New York High School Football Huddle

Skaneateles High School's undefeated season came to a screeching halt, but not from another football team, but from a judge.

The Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court has decided to uphold a suspension levied against the school by the Section III's Athletic Council that ruled an unnamed Skaneateles coach had tried to recuit players from other schools.  Judge John V. Centra's decision not to lift the suspension, means that the season is over for the 9-0 team that was schedule to play for the Section III Class C title on Saturday.

School officials argued the suspension was too severe.  Earlier this week, head coach Tim Green, a former NFL player with the Atlanta Falcons, resigned in hopes that the court would rule in favor of letting the Lakers play in the championship game.

Last week, Skaneateles beat Utica-Notre Dame after a State Supreme Court judge granted a restraining order that allowed the Lakers to post a 46-27 victory in the semifinals. That win doesn't matter now, because today's ruling means that Notre Dame is back-in the playoffs and will face Herkimer in the Class C final on Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

With the national spotlight shining bright on sports concussions and how to make the game of football safer, a central New York State high school football player died this weekend from an injury sustained during a game Friday night.

According to published reports, Phoenix High School junior Ridge Barden died Friday night after being rushed to the hospital after suffering a head injury in the third quarter of his team's game at Homer High School.

Wake Held for Slain NYC High School Football Star

by Jeff Fisher
New York High School Football Huddle

It's been a week since Truman High School football star Isayah Muller was stabbed just hours after graduating.

Tuesday, hundreds gathered to pay their respects at a week in the Bronx for the player, who was killed after an apparent argument between his father and attendants at a Bronx parking facility. The family was on its way to a graduation dinner.

Muller was one of the key members of Truman that won the New York City Public Schools Athletic League championship by beating Beach Channel High School 23-20 in the PSAL Bowl.

Muller had plans to attend Nassau Community College.

Funeral services will be held Thursday.

Bronx Football Team Still Coming-up a Little Short When It Comes to Home Football Games

by Jeff Fisher
New York High School Football Huddle

I came across this interesting story out of New York City about a high school football team that was hoping to play its first home game this year.

Lehman High School in the Bronx hasn't been able to play a home game because it only has a field that is 80-yards long. The Department of Education gave the school $5 million dollars to renovate Lehman's multi-purposed field to include new lights, new bleachers and a new baseball diamond.

According to the CBS 2 story below, players thought the renovation would include an extra 20-yards being added to the football field. That didn't happen, so once again, Lehman will play all of its games on the road.

It was a close vote, but by a 4-3 margin, former Atlanta Falcon and Syracuse University defensive end Tim Green is the new head coach of the Skaneateles Lakers football program.

According to the Auburn Citizen, the school board chose Green over Ron Doctor. Last year, the Lakers finished 1-7.
